After having a bit of a quarter-life crisis (the first of many!) at age 26, I decided that it was time to record one of my songs properly. So, we chose The Hanging Tree – let me give you a bit of background about the song first. You may have read or seen The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins? Well, in the third book, Mockingjay, the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, sings a song from her region called ‘The Hanging Tree.’ It was a song her father had taught her, and was very significant to her relationship with him, as he had died during her childhood. I found the lyrics to be quite beautiful, and one night, sitting by the fire (in freezing Ballarat), strumming my guitar, I found myself singing ‘Are you…are you…coming to the tree?’ I knew that it should sound like a folk song with an eerie touch, and found that the chords and melody came out quite naturally. This was the result.
